Pope Francis Dies at 88: A Transformative Papacy Ends

Pope Francis dies aged 88, Vatican says

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. His death marks the end of a papacy that redefined the Catholic Church's approach to modern challenges, emphasizing humility, inclusivity, and social justice.

Early Life and Rise to the Papacy

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1936, Bergoglio entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1958. He was ordained a priest in 1969 and became Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998. Elevated to cardinal in 2001 by Pope John Paul II, he was known for his pastoral care and commitment to the poor.

In 2013, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, Bergoglio was elected as the 266th pope, taking the name Francis in honor of St. Francis of Assisi. He was the first Jesuit pope, the first from the Americas, and the first non-European pope in over a millennium.

Health Challenges and Final Days

Pope Francis faced numerous health issues throughout his life, including the removal of part of his lung in his youth and colon surgery in 2021. In early 2025, he was hospitalized with double pneumonia, leading to a prolonged health crisis. Despite initial signs of improvement, his condition deteriorated, and he passed away at 7:35 a.m. on Easter Monday.

Legacy of Reform and Compassion

Pope Francis's papacy was marked by significant reforms and a focus on compassion:

  • Social Justice: Advocated for the poor, marginalized, and refugees, emphasizing the Church's role in addressing global inequality.
  • Environmental Stewardship: Released the encyclical Laudato Si', calling for urgent action on climate change and environmental degradation.
  • Church Reform: Implemented measures to address clerical sexual abuse and improve financial transparency within the Vatican.
  • Inclusivity: Promoted dialogue with other religions and supported civil unions for same-sex couples, reflecting a more inclusive approach to Church teachings.

Funeral and Succession

In accordance with his wishes, Pope Francis will be buried in a simple wooden casket at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, departing from traditional papal burial practices. The Vatican has entered a nine-day mourning period, after which the College of Cardinals will convene to elect his successor.
